One possible person is Eratosthenes of Cyrene ~230 BC as he was a Greek scientist who calculated the circumference of the Earth, with remarkable accuracy (some values for the "stadia" he used gives a result within 6% of the actual polar circumference).

== == Given that the circumference of the earth is 40,075.02 km (measured at the equator) the circumference in inches is roughly 1,577,756,664 inches.

His prime objective was to measure a degree on the equator to calculate the circumference of the earth.Studies have shown there has been a large increase in waist circumference in young people. The earth's circumference was accurately measured around 240 BCE by Eeratosthenes. It isn't easy to measure the circumference of large items.

The circumference of the Earth measured at the equator is 24,901.55 miles, or 131,480,184 feet or 40,075.16 kilometers, or 40,075,160 meters.
The circumference of the Earth measured between the North and South poles is approximately 40,007.86 kilometers.
The circumference of the Earth is approximately 40,075 kilometers (24,901 miles) when measured around the equator. If measured around the poles (meridional circumference), it is slightly shorter at about 40,008 kilometers (24,860 miles) due to the Earth's slightly oblate shape.

Eratosthenes of Cyrene using shadows at two different places in Egypt. An amazing achievement for those times (about 200-250BC)
The circumference of the Earth around the Prime Meridian, which is the line of longitude designated as 0 degrees, is approximately 40,075 kilometers. This is the distance around the Earth when measured at the Equator.
From the equator the earth is 24,901.55 miles in circumference or 40,075.16 kilometers. Measured from North pole back around to North pole, the circumference is 24,859.88 miles or 40,008 kilometers.
7926 miles and 12760 km. Thats Pretty long.
The circumference of the Earth is approximately 24,901 miles (40,075 kilometers) when measured around the equator (East-West direction). In contrast, the circumference measured from pole to pole (North-South direction) is about 24,860 miles (40,008 kilometers). This slight difference is due to the Earth's oblate spheroid shape, which causes it to be slightly flattened at the poles.
