The word "Messiah"(Hebrew: mashiach, Greek: christ) is not a name, but a title. It means "anointed one"....(one set aside for a special purpose). One of the earliest usages of the word is in reference to the High Priest at Leviticus 4:3+5. Moses' brother, Aaron, was 'anointed' by God, with literal oil ,at Leviticus 8:12, and could rightly be called "messiah"(Psalm 133:2)(Leviticus 6:22), and there were many others used by God to fulfill a need over the centuries. All these occurances pointed forward to the ultimate "anointed one' or 'Messiah'(Galatians 3:19+24), who would one day come at the appointed time to fulfill the Mosaic Law (Hebrews 10:1-10+9:9-14), provide a ransom for man's sinful state(Romans 5:12+14)(1Corinthians 15:22, 45, 47),and give men hope of eternal life once again(John 3:16)(Matthew 5:5/Psalms 37:11+29). According to the Christian Greek Scriptures, this turned out to be Jesus. (Acts 10:38) . In John 1:41 Andrew found his own brother, Simon, and said to him: "We have found the Messiah", when speaking of Jesus.
