The Hebrew Bible describes the author of Proverbs as 'Solomon, the Son of David, King of Israel.' 1:1 However as Chapter 31 shows they may not all have been written by Solomon. Some Proverbs are ascribed to 'the Sayings of the wise' as mentioned in Proverbs 22:17; 24:23. Chapter 30 is attributed to Agur, Son of Jakeh. Solomon wrote more than three thousand Proverbs but only a small portion of these have been preserved by God. 1 Kings 4:32 Of the work attributed to Solomon, a sufficient amount is Solomon's to speak of Proverbs as being written by him.

The actual word thrift isn't mentioned, however, the value of thrift is expressed several times in Proverbs including Proverbs 21:20 and Proverbs 30:25. Another example is Proverbs 10:5.

There are many proverbs in the Old Testament, especially in the Book of Proverbs, which has around 31 chapters that are devoted to proverbs. Many proverbs can be found throughout the first five book of the Bible, which is knonw as the Law or the Books of the Law. The two books of Kings and the 2 books of Samuel, as well as many or all of the major and minor prophets have wisdom and proverbs in them, especially in Ecclesiates and Isaiah.
