It is a a loving step of obedience to Christ's command to be baptized(Matt. 28:18-20, John14:15). It also identifies you with Jesus Christ. It is an outward symbol of what took place spritually when you received Christ as your Saviour. As you stand in the water, it is a picture of your death in Christ, as you are put under the water, it is a symbol of your burial with Christ, and as you come up out of the water, it is a symbol of you new like in Christ ( Romans 6;3-5; I Corinthians 5:17). Remember, baptism does not save a person or add anything to his salvation, but is a step of obedience and identification with Christ. Only baptism by "immersion" can represent this...................................... Its This But If You Want A Better Explanation Then Goto related link:

The Bible mentions that near the end of 29 C.E. that about six months after John the Baptist begins preaching, Jesus, who was about 30 years old, came to John at the Jordan River to get baptized. Jehovah God had promised John a sign so that he could identify the Messiah. John saw that sign at Jesus’ baptism. Matthew 3:16,17 mentions, “After being baptized, Jesus immediately came up from the water; and look! the heavens were opened up, and he saw God’s spirit descending like a dove and coming upon him. Look! Also, a voice from the heavens said: ‘This is my Son, the beloved, whom I have approved.’” After seeing and hearing what happened, John had no doubt that Jesus was sent by God. (John 1:32-34) Jesus' baptism showed that he was presenting himself to do the will of his heavenly Father who sent him to earth. (New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures)
