It isn't illegal in the sense that the person will go to jail or forfeit property, etc. Only 6 states still have statutes that refer to the illegality of suicide. The premise is, the person should be saved from themselves, the assumption being at the time the person tries to take their own life, they are not "sane". Of course this is not necessarily true. Nevertheless, it gives the authorities the right to take the person into custody for their own safety. Assisted suicide is however a criminal offense, the exception being the Oregon Death With Dignity Act.
