I believe it mainly has to do with the fact that it is to be a part of us. Since The Bible was mostly a masculine sided writing, God laid it out for even the guys from way back then that the woman are to be a part of their lives and be embraced. One of the first eveidences was when, in Genisis, the man and woman are told to "cleave" to each other and become as one. It the neuter sense, if it is a man or a woman, we are to embrace and cleave on to wisdom and become one with "her". Or to bring it a little more home, it would be how us guys these days call a car, boat or a plane a woman's name. Not to condesend anything but that would be the best analogy I could think of.
