big hand for minutes and little hand for hours.
To tell the time to the exact minute.
On the analogue clock, each section is divided into 12 sections. Each number represents one hour.
Between each of these numbers are five smaller division, making for a total of 60, around the clock dial(face). Each of these smaller divisions representsd one minute.
When reading the time, the large hand is read against the 60 minute divisions, and the small hand is read against the number of the hour.
As examples of time reading. When both hands are at the number '12', then it is 12 noon or 12 midnight.
When the large hand is at '3' and the small hand will be just between say '1' and '2', then the clock is read as 'Quarter past one', That is 15 minutes (a quarter of '60'. Sometimes it may be read as 'one fifteen'.
Similarly, the large hand is at '6' ( 30 minutes past the hour) and the small hand is half way between '7' and '8' , it is read as 'Half past seven' or ' seven thirty'.
Similarly the large hand is at '4/8' (20/40 minutes), and the small hand is between '5' & '6' , then it is read as 'Twenty past/to five/six' or. 'Five twenty/forty'.
Hope that helps!!!!

By not learning the meaning of the big hand and little hand
The big hand or longer hand points to the minutes. The small hand or shorter hand points to the hour. The constantly moving hand (ticker) moves according to the seconds.
No. The little hand is the minute hand. The big hand is the hour hand. The long hand is not the big hand, it is the little hand. The short hand is not the little hand, it is the big hand. Grab a dictionary and research the meaning of big, little, short, and long. The shorter hand is the "BIG" hand because it identifies the larger unit of time < hour >. The longer hand it the "LITTLE" hand because it identifies the smaller unit of time <minute>. If you have missed this part of the concept of measuring time then you have been listeniing to a misinformed moron who just taught school for the paycheck and did not understand what they were doing.
When it is 5:45 on a digital clock, the big hand of an analog clock would be on the number 9.
The Clock has both a big hand and a small hand. The big hand is the longer one and it shows you how many minutes. The small hand is the shorter one and it shows you what hour of the day it is.
The little hand is on the 11 and the big hand is on the 5.
