The compressor on a gas turbine and other jet engine types takes the air around us at normal pressures, and compresses it to much higher pressures and temperatures. Like the compression stroke on a internal combustion engine, the incoming air needs to be at extreeme pressures for the engine to be efficient.
I have been an A&P mechanic with Spirit Airlines since 2002 and within two years I was making $31.30hr which is the industry norm to date. That is until Jan 4 2006 when the company gave all the mechanics a 25% + pay cut. I am now making 24hr and have been with no pay increases to date. Also, our health benefits increased with less coverage. In addition our 401k contributions have been reduced. With that said, the newly hired mechanics start at $16.00 base plus $1 per license. With no hope of a pay increase.
A reciprocating compressor is basically a piston pump, much like if you'd take an average internal combustion engine and force it to run. A scrolling compressor uses two plates with a spiral-wound raised ledge on them. The ledges overlap and as they move in relation to each other air gets squeezed further and further into the labyrinth until it reaches the outlet port.
normal safety function, prevents the a/c compressor from building too much pressure and allows more power to tires
