Self powered machines were first used at the start of the industrial revolution. Tabulating machines were known to the ancient Greeks, such as the famous Ankylothera Device. The Romans, too, had contraptions that moved and worked much as we might imagine modern machinery might, though not driven by piston engines. Some of these, such as the catapult, were known as engines of war. The water wheel is considered a fairly crude machine, and can was used to grind grain or wash clothes.
Archimedes invented a "screw" for irrigating crops, another clever early machine. The clepsydra, a water clock, could also be considered a machine.
The first machines of the Industrial Revolution were invented to help speed up the weaving of textiles, or cloth products.
He built the first passenger hydraulic elevator. Was also known for building many other machines using hydraulics.
In 1879, Anna Baldwin patented a milking machine that replaced hand milking - her milking machine was a vacuum device that connected to a hand pump. This is one of the earliest American patents, however, it was not a successful invention. Successful milking machines appeared around 1870.
The first Unimate was installed at a General Motors plant to work with heated die-casting machines. In fact most Unimates were sold to extract die castings from die casting machines and to perform spot welding on auto bodies, both tasks being particularly hateful jobs for people.
ARM is a computer chip manufacturer. They were first known as Advanced RISC Machines, but now just ARM. They make low power chips for use in things like smartphones, pads, and netbooks.

The man responsible for bringing new textile machines to the US was Samuel Slater. He is often referred to as the "Father of the American Industrial Revolution" for his contribution to the development of the textile industry in the country. He brought the knowledge and expertise of the British textile industry to America, establishing the first successful cotton-spinning mill in the US in Pawtucket, Rhode Island in 1790.
