I believe you are referring to GM's Vortech engines installed in many GM trucks. The Vortech line uses a patented fuel injection system that makes the engine more powerful than many others of the same size. The Vortech is currently available in V-6's and V-8's.

A 4-cylinder Vortech was produced for a short time, but it performed so well that their standard (non-Vortech) V-6 suffered in sales. The Vortech 4-banger (known as the 4-Tech) out-powered the standard GM V-6 as well as getting better fuel economy and having a lower price tag. So what do you do with such a great engine that is superior in every way?

You stop making it. *sigh*

Is the engine a free wheeling engine?

Yes, the Mercury Villager and Nissan Quest engine, 3.0L and 3.3L, are all freewheeling engines at the insistance of Ford to enter into the joint venture program. The Maxima and Pathfinder with the same engine remained non- freewheeling (interference engines). I work for Ford and worked on the Villager program from 1989 to 2002 and was personally involved in the development of this program.
