Not sure about PID but I suspect you might mean P&ID, which means Process and Instrumentation Diagram.

Properly done it should look like a very detailed "flow chart" or circuit diagram showing what is contained, how it is controlled, what monitoring and failsafes are in place, etc... for the process in question. The key function is to prevent dangerous situations from being able to occur, such as mixing incorrect chemicals or temperatures in an uncontrolled manner, or allowing possible scenarios when something might flow back up a line and cause contamination, that sort of thing. Also used to troubleshoot and to give a quick understanding of the process.
