What does a vacuum pump do in an ac unit?

Normally an AC unit does not have a vacuum pump in it. It does have a compressor - but the vac pump is a tool for installation. Once you have an air tight network of pipes connecting the indoor and the outdoor units you want to get all the moisture and air out of the system. (The under lieing principles apply to automotive AC as well) The method is to use the vacuum pump to suck the contents out - then refill with inert nitrogen, and rinse and repeat several times to effectively flush any particles of moisture or air out of the system. The tool which allows you to do this is a manifold gauge, it's critical when installing AC systems to remove all air and moisture from the pipes and not allowing any to get back in when you disconnect the schreader valve, so you have to disconnect after the refrigerant has been released into the pipework. If the refrigerant is R410a then when standing it could be at 10 bar pressure, so the best practice is to connect on the low pressure side of the system then run the system and disconnect with it running - so the pressure on the schreader is only about 7 bar. Installing split air conditioning systems should only be done by a trained and competent person though. In the UK there are specific rules about which qualifications are required to do this.

What is a lean burn system?

A lean burn system is a fuel burning system that uses an excess of air in an internal combustion engine. They provide a high air to fuel ratio and are used in some vehicles.

What is heat pump?

A heat pump is one part, of a two part heating and cooling system and can be used as the primary heating unit in mild winter locations. They can also be used to supplement other heating systems where the temperatures are sub-freezing for longer time periods. Heat pumps also are used in summer for cooling. Basically, the way the system works in cooling mode is the same as most any other AC system. When winter comes it essentially runs the system in reverse to produce heat instead of cooling. The advantage is that it is very cheap to run. The biggest two disadvantages are the compressor has to run during both seasons, causing wear... and ... after you get to about 26 degrees F., the heat pump needs auxiliary heat (gas or electric coil) to warm your house. For most warmer climates they are the best choice. Speak with an HVAC professional to determine your region's best heating option.

What exactly is an ac compressor?

An AC compressor is part of an air conditioner which may be used in a car's AC system. The compressor is used to change the pressure between the AC's compartments in order to help condense the refrigerant gas back into a liquid.

What are possible causes for a cars ac to not blow out cold?

Generally, when the refrigerant in the AC system has leaked out( usually due to a hose or seal) a safety switch in the AC system shuts down the compressor so it does not burn itself out. When this happens your AC will not funtion. At this point the system needs to be charged and a 'sniffer'is used to detect the leak.
