Receip or Piston type compressor are used for large duty cycle work (A/c or other equipments), energy hungry but last longer (Heavy Duty). Where as rotary compressor are energy efficient with higher ( Energy Efficiency Ratio) but lower duty cycle and shorter life. Selection of compressor are based on the nature of application. Normally, for room A/Cs with capacity less than 3 ton, most companies offer rotary compressor due to it's EER and less duty cycle. For heavy duty A/Cs, recip or piston compressor best suited.
more then 20 tons capacity use dual semi hermetic reciprocating compressor and separate refrigeration cycles
less then 20 tons up to 5 tons capacity, we can use hermetic reciprocating compressor (generally manufacturer doesn't provide semi hermetic reciprocating compressor to less then 20 tons)
less then 5 tons for split a/c we can use either in rotary and scroll compressor
less then 5 tons for window a/c we can use rotary for sufficient efficiency
Reciprocating compressors are positive displacement in machines. However, separable compressors have higher maintenance costs.
In very crude terms, rotary motion is round & round, reciprocating motion is back & forth. A piston engine has both kinds of motion. The crankshaft displays rotary motion, the pistons display reciprocating motion. The camshaft displays rotary motion, the valves display reciprocating motion. Out on the suspension, the wheels display rotary motion and the shock absorbers display reciprocating motion. (One might say the shocks don't display "true" reciprocating motion because they're not CONSTANTLY in motion, but that one drives on better roads than they have here!)
The Cam
A reciprocating engine is different than when using rotors. Rotors are used in a pistonless rotary engine, using one or more rotors and sometimes called rotary pistons.
The crankshaft and connecting rod (or piston rod).
A rotary compressor has screws or gears that compress a gas. A reciprocating compressor has a piston in a cylinder compressing the gas.
A reciprocating compressor is one in which a piston or diaphragm moves in a reciprocating motion. The compressor used in the AC system of a Saturn is NOT a reciprocating compressor. It is most likely a "rotary vane" compressor.

The refrigeration system used in air conditioners with rotary compressor, the discharged gas is entered firstly into the doom of the compressor, while the system used with reciprocating and other compressors, it is admitted into the discharge tube. and are suction cooled. Why in rotary systems, the discharge refrigerant directly admit into the doom first.
A rotary compressor is like a car engine, with pistons, rods, sleeves, valves, etc. A screw compressor has two screw type rotating parts that squeeze the refrigerant as the screw threads get tighter and tighter. They have long life potential.
Reciprocating - moving back and forth.Rotary - moving in a circle.
Reciprocating air compressors, are less popular in residential cooling systems because they are noisier than a Rotary unit plus the Rotary will cool better.....

Same way a non rotary compressor works

spring type rotary compressor
It is the reciprocating motion of the pistons that is changed into rotary motion by the cam axle.
