Joint efficiency of weld?

In welding, the ratio of the strength of a joint to the strength of the base metal expressed in percent.----

What type of weld is it when the edge of one piece of metal is placed at ninety degrees on the surface of another piece of metal?

Two pieces of metal welded at a 90 degree angle is called a corner joint. Other common joint types: -Butt joint: two pieces of metal laid side by side and welded at the meet, essentially forming one sheet. -Lap joint: similar to a butt joint, but with overlap between the two pieces. -Tee joint: one piece is welded at a 90 degree angle to the second, but not at the edge (forming a 'T' shape).

What is Pittsburghh joint in HAVC duct work?

Refer to the SMACNA reference for metal duct construction. The Pittsburg joint is used for most commonly fabricated metal retangular ducts. Most modern sheetmetal fabrication shops use a mechanized piece of equipment to create the Pittsbugh joint on one edge of the sheet metal that is being formed into a retangular duct. The Pittburgh joint is basically a series of bends in the sheetmetal that create a female joint that will accept the male end of the rectangular duct. The female joint includes an extended section of sheet metal that is mechanically or manually hammered over the male edge of the sheet metal once it is positioned within the Pittsburgh joint. It is much easier to understand when viewing a piece of flat piece of sheet metal that is being formed into a section of duct with a mechanized piece of equipment found in most sheet metal shops. I have created a Pittsburgh joint with a manual hand break for specialized duct fittings. I hope the information has been helpful. Ralph Pimentel C.B.O. What is a tack weld?

When a welder makes a small weld bead to "tack" a joint together so it will not move. This makes it easier to weld a joint without having to clamp it.Tack welding is when a welder makes a small bead to "tack" the metal into place for the final welding.

Metal used to make jet engines?

Shot peened cast alimunum more than likely. Or cast iron to hold up to the higher rpms/pressure/turbocharging.

What is ingot shrinkage?

Due to change in density of liquid metal to solidification shrinkage occurs. Shrinkage found in top of the ingot. It is also called piping.

How can you tell whether cavities in a casting are due to porosity or to shrinkage?

Porosity is a defect, which results from air entrapment in the molten metal due to turbulent flow causing air bubbles. Usually, this defect is characterized by smooth and spherical pores, but if rough and angular it is most likely as a result of shrinkage dendrites. The mechanical properties associated with shrinkage is the thermal expansion of the molten metal when it solidifies and cools to room temperature, if the riser isn't properly designed to accommodate shrinkage, there would be dimensional changes and are usually in form of cracks.

What causes warpage or distortion during welding?

Warping in welding is caused by shrinkage of weld metal, faulty clamping of parts, faulty preparation and overheating of joints. Distortion in welding is caused by uneven heating, improper sequence and the shrinkage of the deposited metal.

What causes a metal on metal clanging noise when at 30mph and again at 65mph?

Most likely a bad motor mount, bad U-Joint / CV Joint - try to pay attention to make sure the transmission is 'shifting' when it happens; that will help you find the problem.

How ultrasonic sensor are used in railway track?

Generally, Non-destructive testing of rails and rail-joint welds. A fault such as a cavity, crack or slag inclusion inside the metal, so invisible to the eye, will reflect the ultrasound pulse thus revealing its presence.
