petrol self ignition temperature is high and requires a spark plug instead to ignite.where as diesel ignites automatically under pressure because of low self ignition temperature without any spark plug....hence petrol cannot be used inplace of diesel
Warning: The above answer is absolutely incorrect. Petrol's flash point is significantly below, not above, diesel. The heat needed for ignition in a diesel engine comes from a compression ratio of over 20:1. Petrol engines have compression ratios of less than 10:1. Even at this lower compression ratio, petrol will still sometimes flash over or "detonate," causing the engine to "knock." This kind of nonsense is why I stopped posting here.
As you know, the piston in the Diesel engine compresses the air in the cylinder so that it gets extremely hot. Fuel is then injected directly into the cylinder where it ignites and causes the power stroke. Because the Diesel engine operates at very high compression ratios it has to be very strong, and therefore heavy. The injector that squirts fuel into the cylinder has to be both strong and very precise in order to force a precise amount of fuel into the cylinder. For these reasons, Diesel engines tend to be heavier than petrol engines, and more expensive because of the very precise engineering required in manufacturing the injectors. So they are not practical for fairly inexpensive 2 wheel vehicles.

a petrol engine uses petrol which is highly combustable, so it can be ignited by a spark. that is why petrol engines have spark plugs. diesel is an oil based fuel, and takes higher temperatures to ignite, it cannot be as easily ignited by a spark and sometimes cant at all, so diesel engines have no spark plugs and the fuel is ignited under extreme heat due to pressure.

Basically diesel engines are much higher compression giving them more torque also the fuel is ignited by compression not a spark like in a gas engine
