If blood soaks through a compress while applying pressure to a wound, do not remove the original compress, as this can disrupt the clotting process. Instead, add additional layers of clean material on top and continue to apply steady pressure. If the bleeding does not stop after several minutes or if the wound is severe, seek emergency medical assistance immediately.
The About.com website (refer to the link, below) offers information on what to do in the event of external bleeding.

Pressure point control of bleeding actions include finding a place on the body where blood vessels are close to the surface, are over a bone, where you can feel a pulse, and that is closer to the heart than the wound. Once you have found the appropriate place, apply pressure with the fingers or with the heel of the hand. The action should compress the artery against the bone and shut off the blood flow from the heart to the wound.
Appliying a high pressure.
For an Adult, apply pressure to compress chest 2 inches. For a Child, apply pressure to compress chest 1 - 1 1/2 inches. For an Infant, apply pressure to compress chest 1/2 - 1 inches.
If a vein has popped, it is important to apply pressure on the area to stop the bleeding. Elevate the affected limb and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and pain. Seek medical attention if bleeding does not stop or if there is excessive pain and swelling.
Stop the blood flow to the area with the wound. Take a belt, piece of clothing, string, etc, and tie it tightly enough above the woun so the circulation below it will slow or cease. If you tie it too tight, you could make them lose the part that's getting no circulation, but it's much better than bleeding to death. Then, find a cloth or something that's absorbent an put it on top of the wound and apply pressure. It'll hurt them, but it sops the bleeding even more. Then, call an ambulance. Doctors will be able to do their best to fix it and stitch it up.
