Yes. Most hospitals now are not hiring Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) or Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) anymore, however it is possible to be an LPN on a pediatric floor, but they can not be a certified pediatric nurse.

There's many different ways to become a nurse:

A diploma program - these seem to be getting phased out, they were offered at a hospital and you did all your training on site. 2 year program.

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)- offered at community/ technical colleges they are 2 year degrees that enable you to sit for the NCLEX.

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN)- 4 year degree program that prepares you to move up the clinical ladder and go to graduate schools.

All of these types are nurses and can work in any setting however many hospitals these days seem to prefer the baccalaureate prepared nurse since they take additional courses and training and research shows they stay in the profession longer and have better outcomes for their patients.

Anyone can study to be a doctor/Pediatrician, and that incl a pediatric nurse. She has to study to be a doctor though.
