Floaters are usually caused when pieces of the eye's vitreous body - which is located between the lens and retina of the eye - break loose within the inner back portion of the eye. When we are born the vitreous body has a gel-like consistency, but as we get older the jelly starts to liquefy - creating a watery center. During this process some gel particles (which we perceive as floaters) will not dissolve, and instead float around the liquid center of the vitreous.
