I would avoid the intake of sugar, post-surgery. Sugar can promote bleeding. We're talking some 24 to 72 hours, post-surgery. My periodontic practioner recommeneded "biting down on luke-warm tea bags, instead of gauze" -- because warm tea bags contain tanic acid which helps heal the gum.
