Non Gonococcal Urethritis.
NGU means non gonococcal urethritis.
Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra. Non-gonococcal urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra that is not caused by gonorrhea.
Acute urethritis, in adults is mostly due to gonococcal or non-gonococcal and sexually transmitted. For gonococcal infection you have to give injection ceftriaxone one gram IV once only to cure it. For non-gonococcal urethritis you have to give cap doxycycline 100 mg twice a day for 10 to 14 days or tablet azithrimycin 1 gram, fallowed by 500 mg twice a day for 10 to 14 days. For a adult less than 50 kg, half the dose is given.
Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis can cause urethritis in males. Herpes can sometimes cause urethritis as well.
prostate disorders, testicular cancer, hydrocele, gonorrhoea, non-gonococcal, urethritis, syphilis, problems with sperm production, ejaculation problems.
There are several disorders of the ureter that are congenital (from birth). An example of this is a duplicate ureter, where there is an extra ureter running from a kidney to the bladder. Uterocele is a narrowing of the ureter which could cause urine to back up into the kidneys and damage the kidney. This is usually caused by a small tumor or hernia. A kidney stone might pass into the ureter causing blockage and a lot of pain!
Doxycycline is one of those excellent anitibioitcs that is often overlooked in light of newer, more expensive antibiotics, but still has an important role in clinical practice today. As an antibiotic it is used for bacterial infections such as non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis (a non sexually transmitted inflammation of the urethra or cervix) as well as respiratory infections (both upper and lower - sinus infections or bronchitis). It is commonly given 100mg twice a day, without regard to meals. At 50-100mg once a day it is used for acne vulgaris. A lower strength, marketed as Periostat 20mg is used for periodontitis but at that dose its mechanism of action is completely unrelated to its antibacterial action. Instead, it is thought that doxycycline inhibits an enzyme known as collagenase which breaks down the collagen that hold certain soft tissues together, in this case, the gums. Although ciprofloxacin is regarded as first line treatment for anthrax by the CDC, doxycycline is listed as an alternative in patients intolerant or allergic to ciprofloxacin. As a pharmacist though, we see it most often for sinus infections, acne and after an abortion (for the cervicitis).
Yes, urethritis can be contagious, particularly when it is caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like gonorrhea or chlamydia. The infection can spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, or oral sex. However, non-infectious causes of urethritis, such as irritation from chemicals or injury, are not contagious. It's important to practice safe sex and seek medical advice if you suspect you have urethritis.
