How MRI works?

As the patient enters an MRI scanner a large magnet surrounds the patient. The scanner subjects nuclei of the body's atoms to a radio signal, temporarily knocking select ones out of alignment. When the signal stops, the nuclei return to the aligned position, releasing their own faint radio frequencies, which are sent to a computer to build up detailed images of the patient's anatomy.

A strong field is applied to a person's body. This causes the hydrogen atoms inside their water molecules to rotate with a particular frequency. This rotation produces a signal that can be detected by the MRI scanner.

It basically works by detecting blood flow in the brain. Areas that use more energy in the brain require more blood flow and thus more oxygen. A more oxygen-rich blood flow produces a different magnetic resonance (the "MR" in fMRI) than oxygen-poor blood flow. Magnetic fields combine with radio waves cause the nuclei of atoms to "flip". This property is known as magnetic resonance. Thus an fMRI scan sends out magnetic and radio waves to find the high levels of oxygen-rich blood.
