In the early 1900's Morphine was the most common drug used; only because in hospitals, battlefield's, etc. you were given morphine as a pain killer and you became addicted due to the amounts that they would give you and then when you left having the after amount they gave you. It was decently easy to get it too. Also most Elixirs and Tonics had up to 50 or more percent of Morphine present. That's why these were 'Amazing' and 'Cured what ailed ya' because you would feel so good from the morphine that it felt like it was working. This is all i know so i hope it helps you; my apologies if anything is wrong. :)
