To become a nephrologist, a medical degree from an accredited medical school is needed. A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree, Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree, or a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS/MBChB) degree can be earned. After earning one of these recognized medical degrees, a residency in internal medicine must be completed followed by a fellowship in nephrology.
