A plastic surgeon must go through medical school and internship just like any other doctor. Then, the intern must go through a surgical residency, working under the supervision of another surgeon. After the residency, there are fellowship options that allow the resident to hone their surgical skills more specifically in the area of plastic surgery. After a few years of that, they can work for a hospital, although most join a private practice that specializes in plastic surgery.
