It depends on the severity of the bruising as well as any damage to surrounding tissue, other organs, ribs, etc... It's difficult to bruise a kidney without affecting other things as well so it's not just the kidney that needs to heal. I have a bruised kidney right now - as a result of a pretty hard fall and mine is considered pretty minor. I also bruised a lung and the muscle tissue around the rib cage. I'm looking at a few weeks to recovery. The more severe the injury the longer it will take - up to a few months.

I'm on day 3 right now and I have yet to see any reduction in the pain levels without medication. It gets pretty intense. There's not a lot you can do to speed healing either. Just like any bruise it has to resolve on it's own. I find a bit of relief applying heat to the damaged muscle tissue but that does nothing for the kidney. You should avoid doing anything strenuous but I think you'll find that your kidney will complain if you try anyway.

Your doctor may recommend a restricted diet. One that would make life easier on your kidney doing it's job in processing what you eat and drink while it's healing.

It doesn't matter where the bruise is. It all depends on how bad the bruise is. Not even a professional doctor could tell you how long it will take. Just be gentle with it and it will heal faster.
