WASH HANDS THOROUGHLY: You should check the first one that was put in there after about ten minutes. If lots of blood and clots are on it, put a fresh wad in and bite down for ten more minutes. Change again, and as soon as the gauze is just light pink, it's ok to remove. DO NOT RINSE YOUR MOUTH OUT. YOU DO NOT WANT TO DISLODGE THE CLOT!!!! Also, do not drink thru a straw cos the sucking action might cause the clot to be pulled out. No hot liquids either, as that will exacerbate the swelling. Sometimes the bleeding stops 10 to 20 minutes after the surgery. Other times, the bleeding can last longuer, or even start again later that day. You might wake up the next morning with some blood in your mouth as well. You should keep the gauze only a few minutes. But it is always good to have a few gauzes near you in case you need them. A wet tea bag can also replace a gauze.
