This depends on the location. in a metropolitan area you will make a higher hourly rate than a rural area because of the call volume. However, in a rural area you will work more hours (three 24 hour shifts rural, vs four 11 hour shifts in the city) so you get the same annual wage no matter where you work.

The pay of an EMT varies drastically depending on where you are working, or volunteering. In many smaller towns, EMTs work on a volunteer basis, getting little or no pay. Some services also pay on a per run pay scale. (Getting paid when you go on a run.) In larger towns or cities, where there is always a full time crew staffed, you may get paid more.
