Once someone tests positive for the PPD skin test, that person will (almost)always remain positive for the rest of their life. Then, there is no sense in placing a PPD skin test again, as you already know that it will be positive. The reason for doing the chest x-ray instead is to make sure that there is no evidence of active tuberculosis disease in the lungs. Not all patients with a "positive PPD" will have an active lung disease from TB, which can be contagious.
How often you get a chest x-ray is dependent on signs and symptoms following a positive PPD read. If no signs and symptoms are present once every ten years is standard. They also have the ability now to have blood drawn and tested yearly for Healthcare workers as opposed to chest x-rays. If signs and symptoms are present then your family Dr will do labs along with chest x-ray.
A TB test is considered positive if there is a bump or swelling at the injection site after 48-72 hours. This reaction indicates exposure to TB bacteria, but it does not confirm active infection. Further testing, such as a chest x-ray and sputum analysis, is needed for diagnosis.
If you had a vaccination where a scar was left on your arm you were probably injected TB and it would be fine, but you cannot be sure until you go back a get a chest x-ray to ensure that everything is okay
A chest x-ray cannot diagnose bronchitis. A chest x-ray may show pneumonia, but one can have pneumonia with a normal chest x-ray.
