Most chalk sold in regulated countries is non-toxic and comes from natural minerals like calcium mined from the ground. If it wasn't sort of dirty, it might actually be good to eat since it's mostly made of calcium. But you shouldn't eat it on purpose.

Some people have a mental disorder known as pica and actually eat chalk without any poisoning.

Chalk is used mostly in schools around children and probably is not a problem.

You can look up the safety sheet on almost anything you can think of- these sheets are called "MSDS" sheets (Material Safety Data Sheets).
