Swimming in natural water such as lakes, rivers, or streams may expose you and your fetus to potential risk. Leptospirosis, a bacterial disease, has become endemic in many areas of the United States. Infection follows contact through broken skin, such as cracks in the skin between toes, while swimming in a stream contaminated by infected rodent or dog urine. The resulting illness may cause miscarriage or preterm labor. Giardiasis and amebiasis are two parasitic infections the may be contracted by swimming in or drinking from contaminated water from streams or ponds. Giardiasis causes mild to serve painful diarrhea but no untoward effects to the pregnancy or fetus. Amebiasis may cause a miscarriage or maternal death.
