The side, because the seat belts that are in that position aren't just the lap-belt ones, they are the should-lap ones. These offer the best security for positioning the child seat in place (although you'll still need to look at clips to stop rocking during the journey). But those lap belt ones don't offer the multi-point security that the side seat does, so make sure you fit the seat there. In fact I don't even know if some car seats CAN be used with single-belt lap seats, I'm pretty sure mine couldn't legally. on top of the car or in the trunk
