In the simplest terms, EMT's are pre-hospital care and transport. Commonly referred to as Basic Life Support (BLS) and often we are supplemented with Advanced Life Support (ALS or Paramedic).

EMT's often take calls where the need is minimal, but there are also times where the call can be urgent (Heart attack, choking, stroke, Diabetic) and have the skills to figure out the immediacy. A stroke and a diabetic emergency sometimes immitate each other.....there are certain tests that can be done to find out what is happening.

Can an EMR work on the emergency ambulance without being and EMT first?

Yes, an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) can work on an emergency ambulance without being an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) first. EMRs are trained to provide basic lifesaving care and assist EMTs and paramedics in emergency situations. However, their scope of practice is limited compared to EMTs, and they must operate under the supervision of licensed EMTs or paramedics. Each state may have specific regulations regarding the roles and responsibilities of EMRs in the ambulance setting.
