A reliable Smallpox inoculation without the risk of earlier inoculations of occasionally causing cases of Smallpox and killing the patient. Jenner's inoculation was based on pustules of the milder but closely related Cowpox instead of pustules of Smallpox as earlier inoculants had been. As the Latin word for Cow is "Vacina" his safe inoculant was given the name "Vaccine" (as all modern vaccines are, despite the fact they have nothing to do with cows).

Note: modern Smallpox vaccine is actually based on real Smallpox but weakened by growing it in a horse. It is extracted from the horse's pustules the same as Jenner did from his cow's pustules.
