An immediate treatment for someone who has ingested bleach (sodium hypochlorite) is drinking milk or a similar dairy product. Drinking water is a second best alternative if milk or another similar substance is not available. Rinse the mouth with milk or water and then have the victim drink. None, repeat none, of this applies to an unconscious victim.

Anyone who is suspected of ingesting bleach and is not conscious should have their pulse and respiration checked. It is important to revert to the most basic first aid treatment when a victim cannot "help" in any way. Inducing vomiting (emesis) is not, repeat not, recommended in any, repeat any, case. Aspiration of bleach (breathing it in) is a risk to be avoided.

Immediately call 911 or arrange for medical transportation to the nearest emergency medical facility. It is important to get some emergency personnel rolling to assist you. First responders can usually provide first aid and transportation as well as alert an emergency facility so they can stand at the ready to assist.

A victim who has swallowed bleach should "keep it down" as attempting to throw it up can further expose sensitive linings (mucous membranes) in the esophagus and trachea to severe damage. Milk will dilute the bleach and be "attracted" to the stomach lining where the fatty dairy substances will tend to "coat" those tissues and limit damage.

Bleach is so unpleasant that anyone who drinks it will probably not be able to ingest very much. Milk or a similar dairy product is a good thing if it can be provided immediately. A hospital or well-equipped clinic will be able to pump the stomach (nasogastric aspiration) of a victim. It might be that an order to administer activated charcoal following NG aspiration is given to prevent further damage and irritation from any remaining bleach. The administration of intravenous (IV) fluids might be ordered by a physician as well if the ingested quantity is suspected to be high.

It is possible that admission to a hospital may be recommended for further treatment and monitoring. Electrolyte tests and a blood panel may well be done. A follow up check could include an endoscopic examination to assess damage to the throat and stomach lining. Bleach is a common household material, and ingestion of this poison/toxin must be taken seriously.
