Airway - the airway of the patient is clear and nothing is blocking it. Including the tongue.

Breathing - the patient has respirations, you can see the chest rising up and down.

Circulation - verification that the patient has a pulse. The pulse can be checked by placing an index finger on the patient's wrist below the base of the thumb, palm side up.

According to the AHA 2010 protocol, the initial assessment of a an unconscious patient goes according to the acronym CAB, rather than ABC. Each of the letters remaining with the original meaning as described above.
