DO education is not as scientific based one as the MD education in general. DO education started by an MD for business and economic reasons to accept substandard candidates to give them a type education that is less rigorous and less scientific. Even today no good candidate would decline an MD medical school admission to an U S Medical school only to go to a DO school.
The average MCAT scores and good undergraduate GPAs are far below for DO schools' admissions than for MD schools' admissions. Medical Schools admission Statistics are very clear on this fact. People should be truthful to the public.
Because of scarcity of health care providers for the military and VA hospitals and they can not always attract the MD applicants, the Federal Government asked those systems to accept DOs as equivalent out of dire need but not based on merit. This gave a ticket to DOs to become trained in MD training programs.
