A nurse educator is a teacher to train nurses. They combine their clinical experience with an interest in teaching to shape and train the nurses of tomorrow. A nurse educator can teach in a nursing school program, be university faculty, work for a trade school, or teach in a clinical setting. They may also be part of a staff education program in a health care facility. In order to be a nurse educator, they have to be a registered nurse (RN), as well as have at least a master’s degree in nursing. Most nurse educators design, implement, evaluate and revise academic and continuing education programs for nurses. This can be a program with those seeking a nursing degree, or a continuing education program. They are constantly evaluating, documenting and reshaping their programs to design the best curricula. A nurse educator works closely with students to advise and counsel them and help identify their strengths and weaknesses. They will create learning opportunities to build on the strengths and work on the student’s weakness. Nurse educators are looked up to as leaders by their students. They must possess excellent communication skills, have critical thinking skills and be flexible. They need a strong background in teaching theories and be able to evaluate and assess their students. A nurse educator can specialize in a specific disease or disorder. This certification includes an examination as well as 1,000 teaching hours. They also must have experience working with patients with the disease or disorder. Nurse educators can also be part of a research group. They can also work on grant writing for nonprofit health education. A new trend in the field of nurse educators is for a medical device company to hire them to go to the hospitals and teach other nurses how to use their equipment. This is ideal for someone who wants to travel. There are programs available for nurses that are interested in becoming nurse educators that will instruct them on teaching methods and other skills they will need. The salary for nurse educators ranges from $50,000-$80,000. Those with doctorate degrees typically earn more than those with just a master’s degree.
It primarily depends upon the degree and specialization, but as a general rule of thumb - it is. A nurse practitioner has either a Master's degree or a Doctorate degree. There are other nursing specialties that also require these degrees such as Legal Nurse Consultant, Certified Nurse Specialist, Certified Nurse Midwife, and Nurse Educator to name some. Each of these has additional responsibilities above and beyond that of a registered nurse and are comparable to a nurse practitioner other than they are in different fields and responsibilities.
An RN has the opportunity to work in many different positions. Some jobs that are available for an RN are, nurse anesthetists, case manager, educator, and an analyst.
