A Utilitarian would be in favour of screening which shows whether or not an embryo has a serious illness such as Brittle Bone Disease, giving the parents the decision of which embryo to implant into the mother's womb. This is because, although the life of the embryo with an illness is by no means less worthy than the embryo without, it might live a life of extreme suffering and also this might affect the lives of its family. Therefore a Utilitarian would probably say that this screening is right because although, potentially the embryo with an illness will die, it might make the lives of the rest of its family better to have the option to choose which embryo to implant.
Also, a Utilitarian might say that whereas a seriously ill child would need constant care and supervision, which might be very draining for their family, a healthy child would be able to be a support for their friends and family and to help their society far more easily than the seriously ill child would be able to.
However, a Utilitarian would not be in favour of 'Designer Babies', because the creation of them would only benefit the rich and the rest of the population could potentially be greatly disadvantaged. Therefore, they would believe that the creation of 'Designer Babies' is wrong and that this is where the line should be drawn.
Your mom is a designer of babies!
Karl Marx
Designer babies are illegal in all 55 states including Puerto Rico.
There is no definitive number on how many designer babies have been born as the practice of designing specific traits in babies is controversial and varies across countries. The technology to create designer babies is still largely experimental and not widely used in clinical settings.
