Kids usually try smoking out of curiosity, or because people close to them smoke -- friends, brothers or sisters, parents. Kids can also be influenced to try smoking if people they admire, like sports heroes, movie stars, and singers smoke, and they can be influenced by ads that make smoking look glamorous and fun. Eventually, if they try it often enought to get the hang of it, they find that the nicotine in cigarettes makes them feel good, and they start to smoke for pleasure or to avoid feeling tense. Eventually, they may become addicted to the nicotine, which means they feel bad if they don't smoke. Many grownups stop because they're afraid of the diseases you can get if you smoke for many years, but kids, who are too young to be worried about the diseases, keep starting, so there's a new supply of smokers!
