Heat Stroke is often confused with "Heat Exhaustion", which is less severe. Heat Stroke is acute hyperthermia which is a true, life-threatening medical emergency. Patients with heat stroke will display the following signs and symptoms: * high body temperature * the absence of sweating, with hot red or flushed dry skin (Hallmark symptom!) * rapid pulse * difficulty breathing * strange behavior * hallucinations * confusion * agitation * disorientation Patient's with severe hyperthermia need to be cooled as soon as possible. First Aid Steps: * ACTIVATE EMS IMMEDIATELY. This patient must be transported to definitive medical care as soon as possible. If EMS is delayed or you are in a remote area, they can give you further advice on how to treat the patient while you await their arrival. * Move the patient to a cool or shaded area. * If patient is unconscious, place on his or her side, with an arm tucked under the head. This will help avoid aspiration should the patient vomit. * Apply cool or tepid water to the skin. A light mist from a garden hose will work, or wet towels. Fan the patient to promote evaporation and sweating. * Apply towel-wrapped ice-packs to the armpits and groin area. * Do NOT give food or liquids to any partially conscious patient.
