Where can you find essential oils?

There are three ways that essential oils are extracted. They are steam distilled, cold pressed and solvent extraction.

Steam distilled is used in the majority of essential oils and is done via machine. First the plant materials are gathered. Essential oils come from many different parts of the plant including, stems, leaves, roots, flowers and bark. The material is put into a chamber and hot steam is passed through the material. The steam causes the plant pores to open and release the oil and the oil evaporates with the steam. The steam is then put through a cooling chamber where it turns back into water and then passed into a tank where the essential oil floats to the top and is skimmed off. The leftover water is called flower water or flower essence.

Cold pressing is used on all citrus fruits. The essential oils are contained in the rinds so the rinds are run through a machine where spikes are inserted into the rind and the oil is extracted.

Solvent extraction is used on flowers that are too delicate to withstand the heat of distillation. A solvent, usually hexane or something like that is used to extract the oil. If an essential oil is labeled and "absolute" you know solvent extraction was used.

Essential oils can be taken internally under certain circumstances, although some should never be taken internally. There are a few you can incorporate into your cooking or take in a capsule or beverage. Also, taking essential oils internally is usually the least effective method of absorption.
