Pay rates vary quite a bit, but in general, it is more lucrative to do medical transcription than medical billing and coding; note that voice recognition programs are increasingly replacing human transcriptionists, so this field does not necessarily have a bright future. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational outlook handbook, the median annual wage of medical transcriptionists was $32,900 in May 2010 whilst the median annual wage of medical records and health information technicians (medical billers and coders) was $32,350 in May 2010.
Medical transcription jobs are part of the larger field of allied health profession. These are a wide range of medical fields with the exception of doctors and nurses. Allied health jobs are in demand and have very good projections for future growth which is a good indicator for job security. Medical transcription jobs have an average growth rate (according to Government data) so they are not as in-demand as other jobs in the field but still should experience growth. Like other businesses, medical transcription jobs are now also being outsourced giving hundreds to thousands of people jobs world wide and the need for medical staff always almost increasing because of the people's needs, the need for MT's also gets bigger. One of the reasons why people choose to be in this field is the flexibility of the job - you can work even at your home.
After transcription, the mRNA is processed by the spliceosome, which splices out the introns (because introns are not part of the coding sequences for protein), and "stitches" the exons together to form the final transcript that is sent to the ribosome for translation.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be a 6% increase in this industry by 2020. Right now, there are more than 100,000 thousand medical transcriptionist in US and more outside of the country.
DNA in the nucleus is transcribed by RNA polymerase enzymes to produce messenger RNA (mRNA). The transcribed DNA regions include protein-coding genes, which contain the instructions for making proteins, as well as non-coding regions such as promoter and enhancer sequences that regulate gene expression.
We are all created different. We have different talents and skills. Many people have the skills to work in the medical field. They enjoy helping others. When we think about a medical career, we often think of nurses and doctors. These two professions are crucial in the medical field, but there are so many more positions that can give you an opportunity to have a great medical career. Healthcare requires many positions to make it work. There are the hands on people that we see, and there are people behind the scenes that are not readily seen. All of these people play an important part in the medical field. A medical career can involve direct interaction with patients or indirect interaction. For example, a medical transcriptionist plays a huge part in patient care, but the patient never meets this person. A medical transcriptionist must be able to listen to the audio notes of a doctor or other health professional and transcribe this information accurately. Becoming a medical transcriptionist usually takes 6-9 months. Many community colleges offer this program. Some offer an associate degree in medical transcription. This medical career involves knowing the human anatomy very well. The medical transcriptionist must be familiar with medical terminology and medical procedures. The information in a patient's medical records comes from the transcription of this person, so it is critical that they are accurate. Many medical transcriptionists work from home. They have flexible schedules, and many are independent contractors. Medical coding is another medical career that is very important. They work behind the scenes also. These professionals are responsible for billing insurance companies and patients. The medical coder must be trained to recognize the CPT codes that are used in the medical profession. Many junior and community colleges can prepare a person for this medical career. The program can take from 6-12 months in most cases. Some choose to get an associate's degree in medical coding. The medical coder must be able to take the transcribed medical record and assign codes for the procedures. Each procedure in medicine has a code. This is how the medical facility gets its money, so the medical coder must be very accurate.
mRNA gets its code from DNA during process "Transcription".
It is the zip code of the person who gets the bill for the card.
There are different areas of medical administation. A front desk secretary who does medical billing gets paid about 30,000 yearly if they are working in a hospital. A private office pays alot less. I can only speak for New York only. From my experience searching for jobs in other states, down south pays alot less for medical administration. Alomost half of what you get in NY.
