There are records dating from Athens and from ancient Egypt that speak of people applying moldy bread to wounds (which may actually be taking advantage of the effects of Penicillium mold!). All throughout recorded history, there are records of people applying things to wounds in an attempt to increase healing. While the idea of bacteria being the problem probably didn't come into the picture until the likes of Anton van Leeuwenhoek and his contemporaries showed up (early 1700's), people have always tried to enhance wound healing, and often with ways we considered primitve once, but are now taking another look at.
