I'm not sure that I have the correct answer to this question, but I've heard from family relatives that my dad was the first legally blind person to become a doctor in the United States. He graduated from UCLA medical school in 1980 and had been legally blind before that due Stargardts's disease, an incurable disease that causes early macular degeneration. His name is Page Painter (MD, PhD) and he was not able to work in the field of medicine at the time due to blatant discrimination. He went on to work in toxicology and pursue research in mathematical Biology.
