Because most people are right handed

MY ANSWER:

In addition to the previous answer, I wanted to add that a reason for this is that the bench seats on ambulances are on the passenger side, and it's easier to work on a patient a little ahead of you versus right up to your feet as they would be when centered. Also, when you are seated in the bench seat it allows you to reach over the patient to grab gear from the cabinets, without having to step over a patient as you would if they were on the right hand side.

As to why the bench seat is on the passenger side? Tradition.

Most British ambulances have their trolley cots on the right hand side so I guess it would depend on which side of the road you drive on. Different manufacturers have different layouts.

I cant access the discussion, but:

It has to do with the venous drainage of the inferior vena cava which is on the right , hence if you lay a pregnant woman on her right, supressing of the IFC, can lead the fetus to hypoxia and kill it. By having the stretcher on the left, the pregnant patient is layed with her left side down, until full dilatation.
