It depends on the woman and the particulars of her pregnancy. Some doctors are more comfortable watching fetal development very closely, especially following fetal loss (miscarriage). Others there are real medical concerns the doctor must keep an eye on bleeding, fetal growth, if IUGR is suspected, a poorly working placenta or just small for dates. There are many physical reasons to have sonograms done regularly.

For some women, the sonogram is just a reassurance that the baby is well, developing and growing normally.
