It seems nobody can agree on this. The most popular theory was that because Beth wore so much black that her friends began to refer to her as the Black Dahlia. But police on the case say that the name was given to her by the press (no individual was named). Another version was that at the time of her murder (1947) there was a well-known prostitute that was called the Black Dahlia and that Short was confused with her. This could also be why many people were under the impression that Short herself was a prostitute, which we know she was not.

A childhood friend of Short's claimed that she did notwear black more than any other woman, and that she favored pastel pinks and blues. If this is true it must be a coincedence that most pictures of her show her wearing very dark clothing. But we may never know for sure. The case is such an old one, people die, move on or forget such details. Any of these theories may or may not be the truth.
