body mass index (BMI) is a way to estimate how healthy your weight is given how tall you are. For adults (ages 20 and up for these purposes), it's calculated as follows: [(weight in pounds)/(height in inches)^2] X 703 For example: to calculate the BMI of an adult who is 5ft 2inches tall and weighs 115 pounds. First put the height into inches (5'2" = 62") then square that number (62^2 = 3844). Then divide the weight in pounds by the squared height from above (115/3844 = 0.0299). Then multiply that number by 703 (0.0299 x 703). So that person's BMI is 21. There are lots of free websites where you can type in your height and weight and get your BMI. Note that it's slightly different for kids and teens, where age and sex are taken into account.
