Therapeutic skills involve 1) providing open-ended time during the early portion of sessions, in order to allow venting of feelings, and discussion of the topic(s) of choice by the client, and 2) use of empathic, non-judgemental statements that reveal your understanding, without pretending to "know" what the other person's experience is like for them, and 3) use of cognitive reframing techniques, so as not to enable repeated negativistic statements and self-descriptions to persist, along with 4) motivational techniques which provide hope and courage to change maladaptive behaviors, and many many more.

Above all, work with THEIR emotional "growth edge", not YOUR belief, idea or bias as to how rapidly your client should change. Accept people where they are. Help them to get to where they want to be. Don't take on their burdens - because, as wise people have said (in many cultures), "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you've fed him for a lifetime".
