The most likely reason is the hemoglobin is being manufactured at higher than usual levels in order to compensate for smoking cigarettes. Carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke binds the Hgb molecule, displacing oxygen. This requires more Hgb to be made, in order to carry needed oxygen to the cells of the body.

Other conditions are possible, however, including hemochromatosis, and others.
